18 remain in cup
NZPA Sydney The number of horses declared for the $lOl,OOO Australian Cup, to be run at Flemington next month, was eight down on last year when first acceptances were taken. i Eighteen horses were declared for the 2000 m weight-for-age event, two below the capacity of 20 that could run. Until last year the Australian Cup was a handicap event but was changed to a weight-for-age race to attract a better class of gallopers. Among those declared for the race, which is run on Monday, March 10, were the crack New Zealand stayer, Shivaree, which is due to be flown to Melbourne on March 3, and the other hot contender, last year’s Melbourne Cup winner, Hyperno. Gold and Black, a New Zea-land-bred Melbourne Cup winner. like Hyperno. was another declared, together with the Kazakstaan mare, Mmuetto, which had an all-the-way win over Hyperno and another Australian Cup runner, Meliador, at Caulfield on Saturday. I Also still in, with final acceptances to be taken on Thursday. March 6, is former New : Zealander, Prince Lee.
