Red Rum banned
NZPA London The triple grand national winner, Red Rum, has been banned from this year’s race at Aintree because he is too popular. Red Rum, which retired to a life of “appearance roles” at village fetes and betting shop openings, would distract attention from the race’s runners, according to the organisers, Ladbroke’s. In reply his trainer, Ginger McCain said: “Rummy has become part of the National tradition. He retired three years ago but he turns up free of charge on National day. “People won’t recognise the race without him.”
