Executive power

Sir, — The Prime-Minister is going around saying that the New Zealand electorate would throw out any Government which abused its executive power. Oh yes? How about an example? Actually, there is nothing the New Zealand electorate likes better than a good abuse of executive power, and National is pinning its hopes on a beauty — the squandering of $6OO million on a high energy/ low job content future. My impression is that no New Zealand government has ever been defeated be-

cause it trampled on the rights of individuals who were not rich and powerful. I would like to see a good proportional representation, scheme in New Zealand. I would also like to see it take a two-thirds majority of Parliament to pass a law — but only a simple majority to repeal it. Then we would start to get some sensible co-operation and compromise in this country. — Yours, etc., ALAN WILKINSON. February 25, 1980.
