Strong ewe sale at Little River

h Although the extremely ■high sales recorded at ewe fairs last, week were not repeated, ..Vendors had every :reason to be satisfied with yesterday’s Little River ewe fair. •

■ .Romney two-tooths sold to $43.20, Coopworths to $40.40,. and Perendales to $37. Last year the top prices for these'breeds were $34:40, $31.80, and $32.60, respectively.’ ■■

The trend towards Romneys, which started at last yearns sale, continued yesterday. The demand for this breed exceeded the supply and there was fierce competition for every pen. R. t. Masefield (Goughs Bay) was the top vendor. His pen of 50 Romneys, selling for $43.20, were an ex cellent example of what is sought in the breed these days — open face, length and good stance. Mr Masefield ■ also sold 50 •at .$40.20 and 50 at $37.60. J. R. • ‘ Stanbury (Little River) had an outstandingly consistent sale with his line of 1108 Romneys. These ranged from $30.20 to $4l at an average of $34.56. Last year his pen average for the 768 Romneys was $20.70, with a top price of $26. Annandale Estate (Pigeon Bay) had 397 Romneys which, sold between $33.20 and s4l;’ of these; 183 exceeded $4O.

Reflecting the -excellent sale for Romneys, most pens sold in the $32 to $3B bracket, only a few pens being below $3O. Last year the average sales :were between $25 and $3l.

For the second successive year, Knights. Estate (Lavericks Bay) . was the leading .Coopworth vendor. Last year ■the estate sold 497 at a pen average of ■ $27 and a- top price of $31.80. This year 607 were sold at an average of $35.21.

Other Coopworths sold well,, most being in the $3l to $36.50 -range. Last year most pens fetched between $2O and $26. .'.' Competition for Perendales was not as strong. The top price; $37, wbnt to P. D. and J. C., Helps ..(Port Levy) who sold .a pen of 50 for $37: The same vendors sold 70 for $34.20 .and. 72 for 534. Other Perendales mainly sold for $27 to S‘34 with a few sales making over $35. Last year most Perendales made from $22 to' $25. Competition was strong throughout the sale. There was only one passing. More . than half of the stock offered will remain on Banks Peninsula, the balance going to Leeston, Lincoln, and West Coast buyers.
