Crushing soccer win
Special correspondent Noumea The New Zealand soccer party had • its first look at the Australian team when it crushed the host nation, New Caledonia, 8-0, in a first-round match in the Oceania Cup tournament at Noumea on Sunday afternoon. Obviously a young side —• its coach, Mr Rudi Gutendorf, maintains the average age is only 20 — it nevertheless looked good in its first outing, showing the advantages of six days train-
ing in Noumea before the start of competition. But any performance has to be taken in perspective and the opposition provided by New Caledonia was hardly up to international standard. Provided New Zealand gets through its opening match against Tahiti (it was due to finish at 1 a.m. (N.Z. time) this morning) without dropping a point, the final should be between Australia and New Zealand which should undoubtedly produce the best football of the week.
