Radcliffe’s road race
Mel Radcliffe (New Brighton) has won the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association Trans Tours 20,000 m road race from Hoon Hay to Tai Tapu for the fifth time. In spite of an enforced comfort stop 2km from the finish, he ran the remarkable time of 62min 38s. His record stands at 61min 19s. Frank Brookes (Toe H) was second in 63min 48s, Dave Rowell (Olympic), 63min 255, was third, Brenton Joyce (St Martins), 63min 355, was fourth, Gary Clarke (Olympic), 65min 20s, was next, and Brian Atkins (Pa-pariui-Redwood), 65min 435; was sixth.
