Polo tournament
Amuri A was unable to overcome a good start by Ashburton A in the final of the open- grade for the Lochiel Cup at the Amuri club’s polo tournament at Culverden.
Ashburton scored two goals in the first of the six chukka final and from that point Amuri struggled to keep in touch. Ashburton capitalised on a number of penalties against Amuri and its goal shooting was very accurate.
Amuri fought back in the last two chukkas but Ashburton by that time had a firm grip which it was not about to relinquish. Ashley won the Amuri Handicap Cup, awarded to the team scoring most goals above its handicap over the two days, and Taieri B won the Upper Highfield Plate for the B grade handicap competition. Taieri B won the B grade final 51-3 against Amuri C. It was a fast game and Taieri maintained its 21-goal handicap holding off a strong challenge in the final stages. The winning Ashburton team
was: M. Askin, J. Askin, E. O’Sullivan, D. O’Sullivan.
The Taieri B team was: R. Johnson, S. Crutchley, J. Mains, P. Radford.
John Askin won the award for the best senior pony with Tlbley, and Alan Calder (Amuri A) won the award for the senior team of ponies with Fonty, Nicky and Tosca.
Stuart Crutchley won both pony awards in the junior section. Becky was judged the best pony, and Becky and Twiggy were judged the best pair. Both horses are greys and it was the second time the pair have won an award at a tournament this season. Results were:—
