Alarm sounds during dessert

Christchurch firemen were almost allowed to finish their Christmas dinner in peace yesterday. They were halfway through the dessert course of fruit salad, jelly, and ice-cream before an alarm interrupted the communal meal. It was to a house fire in Maidstone Road. The firemen who responded made a good save. “For once, the call came right at the end of the meal,” a spokesman said. Earlier, firemen at the Central Fire Station had celebrated Christmas with a main course of cold turkey, new potatoes, salad, and vegetables — “ail cooked by ourselves.” At the Central Police Station, it was a much more sombre picture. The cafeteria was closed, and Christmas Day was much like any other for the police on duty. “If you want Christmas dinner in this job, you bring your own sandwiches," one policemen said. Of the three emergency services, St John ambulancemen probably had the best arrangement. The eight men on duty were allowed home for dinner in two two-hour shifts.
