Fire risk 'extreme’

Weeks of north-westerly winds have pushed the lire risk in Canterbury i forests to "the absolute extreme," according to the Forest Service fire control officer in Christchurch (Mr R. A. Collier). "Any fire started in these conditions would go like a bomb. There might be no stopping it,” said Mr Collier. On Monday, most Canterbury forests rated more than eight points on the Forest Service fire risk scale.

Eyrewell was 9.5: Balmoral 9: Hanmer 8.9: Ash'ey. 8.8; and Omihi, 8.5. The Hanmer and Craigieburn forests, which have public walkways, had not yet been closed, but it was essential that the nublic take extreme care in and near all Canterbury forests, said Mr Collier. Work in the fol might have to be suspended after the Christmas break if the northwesterly weather continued, he said.
