System upsets Jones
NZPA Watkins Glen, New York Alan Jones of Australia, who won the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, could < become the first driver in : more than two decades to record the most victories and still miss the Grand Prix world title. In 1958, Mike Hawthorne, < of England, won just one race, but defeated Stirling Moss, also of England, 42-41. in season points in spite of Moss’s four victories.
Jones, under the complicated new scoring system this season, has won four times but has already been eliminated from championship contention. The steady South African driver, Jody Scheckter, has three wins and enough other' high finishes to secure the crown. The new system allows a driver to count only his four best finishes in each half of) the ye”.
