Teacher fined $200 for growing drug
A secondary school teacher was convicted and fined $2OO on a charge of cultivating cannabis when he appeared before Mr K. W. Frampton. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
lan Basil Smith, aged 26, admitted the offence which occurred on September 28.
Sergeant C. J. Shannahan [said that the Cuiverden constable had visited the Balmoral forest camp where in the defendant’s cabin 10 cannabis plants were found growing. In addition a book on how to grow cannabis was found.
Counsel (Mr G. D. Horne) said his client had planted them as an experiment and they were for his own use. Mr Horne sought suppression of his client's name on the ground that he taught in the nearby local high school and publication of it might mean he could lose his job.
The Magistrate declined the application. He said he was not prepared to suppress the defendant’s name in view of the nature of the offence. CHARGES DENIED
Incidents at New Brighton and in the city on Sundayresulted in the appearance of four young men yesterday.
Each pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Dean Francis Shaw, aged 20, a spray painter, was charged with driving a motor car on the Marine Parade car park in a manner which might have been dangerous; and with wilfully damaging a car to the value of $lOO.
Terence James Anderson, aged 20, unemployed, was charged with assault, and j Rochford Hill, aged 21, a '* labourer, with assault and with wilfully damaging a car e windscreen. All three were remanded ■ on bail to November 30 for g defended hearings. Evans is alleged to have r escaped from the Rolleston . Detention Centre on September 28. ] He was remanded in custody to October 8 during which time a medical report is to be obtained. BURGLARY CHARGES ■ A chemical processor, who appeared on three charges of burglary was remanded without plea to October 8. Gavin Patrick Nolan, aged 18, is alleged to have burgled the premises of Canberra Crafts on two occas--1 sions and to have broken i and entered the premises of j Cottage Crafts. ! The alleged offences were I said to have occurred between May and July. Nolan was allowed bail of $l5OO. BOOKMAKING CHARGE Anthony Patrick Canovan, aged 38, a restaurant owner, was remanded on bail of i $5OO to October 8 on a I charge laid under the gaming act. ' Canovan is alleged to ‘have carried on the business of bookmaking on September 29 having previously been convicted of bookmaking last year. No plea was entered.
13 CHARGES ' A woman, aged 24, and a iman, aged 31. who jointly jappeared on 13 charges of false pretence, were each reimanded to October 8 without plea. ' Graeme Douglas Walker, aged 31. an artist, was remanded in custody.
Bail was opposed by Sergeant R. H. Prouting who said further charges were pending. Jennifer Anne Johansen, aged 24, unemployed, was remanded on bail’ of 8500 and ordered to report daily to the police.
The couple is alleged to have obtained accommodation, meals, cash and clothing to a total value of more than $l5OO, as a result of the- alleged offences which were committed ini Christchurch, Nelson, andj Oamaru. The alleged offences were! said to have all occurred, last month. DEPOSITIONS Harrison Te Whiu, aged! 49, a labourer, elected trial j by jury on a charge of indecently assaulting a 16-year-old girl on September 8. He was remanded on bail to November 8 for the taking of depositions.
