Anglo-Irish relations

Sir, — M. Creel (October 1) is wrong in attributing the cause of strife in Ireland to British Imperialism. The cause was religion originally, when England wanted an Orange Protestant Monarch instead of its rightful Catholic Stuart King. The. English settlers in “the Pale” were Protestants foisted on a predominantly Catholic country. The descendants of these have kept up not so much their religion, as their bigotry. Catholics in Eire do not normally have this failing, giving office to minority groups. Injustices originated by original settlers, perpetuated and enforced by the Army of Occupation, caused violence. If the Pope learns the truth, no-one is better qualified to point out that there is no substitute for

justice. The underhand viole ce of injustice eventually erupts into outward violence. I hope his next stop after America is 10 Downing Street. — Yours, etc., V. H. ANDERSON. October 1, 1979.
