National strike
Sir, — The recent attempt to hold a general strike failed through a lack of consciousness on the part of employed New Zealanders to see the wider implications of Government involvement in the drivers’ pay issue. It is important to see this Government’s views, as espoused by such people as Mr Couch, who would like to see certain people who stand out in our society as different, issued with identity cards, by Mr Bolger who would tell a legally constituted Court of Arbitration what to do; and of course Mr Muldoon who fears a red under every bed, especially the Corso one, and like a very good servant of the public uses his votergiven authority to knock his critics aside. I suggest nonstrikers look at these and other activities of this Government and not see the strike issue as blue collar versus white collar. — Yours, etc.,
E. MARTIN September 27, 1979.
