Otago starts on high note
PA Wellington Otago served notice it will be a strong contender for national women’s hockey honours when it soundly beat last year’s joint holders, North Shore, 5-0, on the opening day of the New Zealand tournament at Wellington yesterday.
Most of the game was played in mid-field, but Otago broke through slow North Shore defence three times in the first half to score each time, and added two more goals in the second spell. Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay fought a one-all draw. The Bay’s Teresa Luxton scored in the first minutes from an indirect penalty corner. Canterbury drew level late in the second half from a p talty stroke converted by Nicky Sherriff. Northland made a good beginning when it beat
Waikato, 1-0. Waikato attacked from the start, but almost the first time Northland ventured into Waitako territory k was awarded a penalty corner from which Ann Tait scored for the only goal.
