Yacht crew’s appeal fails
NZPA Tallinn, U.S.S.R. New Zealand’s Soling crew competing in the preOlympic yachting regatta at Tallinn lost its bid to be reinstated in third place in Saturday's race. The crew—Murray Thom, Alan Robinson, and Peter Jordan—had its appeal against disqualification rejected after a 45min hearing by the international jury yesterday. Losing its hard-fought third place, together with a disqualification from eleventh in the second race of the series, has left the crew isolated at the bottom of the table with three races to go, and virtually no chance of
finishing in the top eight nations to pass the New Zealand Olympic qualifying standard. The New Zealanders were ruled out for an offence committed a full 16 minutes before the race started, when they sailed on the wrong side of a committee boat. Their appeal was based on their contention that they had been unable to recognise the committee boat—a grey Soviet navy auxiliary identical to several press and other non-official boats. They also argued that the identifying red flag could not be distinguished from the many red flags flying from Soviet vessels in Tallinn Bay.
