Alan Jones makes it three

NZPA Zandvoort Alan Jones, of Australia, gained his third consecutive Formula One victory by winning the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, the Netherlands.

The 32-year-old Londonbased driver continued his dominance in West Germany and Austria and became the first driver to win three consecutive races since Niki Lauda achieved the feat in 1975.

However, the new pointsscoring system has cost Jones any chance of the world championship. In spite of his three wins, he cannot catch the title leader, Jody Scheckter, of South Africa. Scheckter drove his Ferrari into second place behind Jones’s Williams, and the six points he gained put him beyond the Australian s reach.

Scheckter has 44 points, Jaques Lafflte 36, and Gilles Villeneuve, has 32. Jones has 34, but can gain only six more under the rules.
