Japan in A.N.Z.U.S.?

NZPA Sydney A suggestion that Japan be invited to join the A.N.Z.U.S. pact has been made by one of Australia’s most experienced diplomats, Mr Alan Renouf.

In his just-published 555page book “The Frightened Country,” he says an Australian invitation for Japan to join the A.N.Z.U.S. pact would display more tangible evidence of Australian trust in Japan than ever shown before.

Mr Renouf, recently retired as Australia’s Ambassador to the United States and a former Secretary of Foreign Affairs, says that A.N.Z.U.S. (Australia, New Zealand, United States) is a collective security pact extracted as the Australian and New Zealand price for a lenient peace treaty with Japan. He says the United States planned to have Japan as a foundation member of A.N.Z.U.S., but the idea was opposed by Australia.
