New Lincoln water scheme deferred

Plans for a domestic waterreticulation scheme in Lincoln have been deferred untill a planning decision on a proposed sewerage system for the township is known. The Ellesmere County Council decided yesterday to put off loan raising for the $308,000 water scheme because of a possible rise in the cost of the sewerage system resulting from a decision of the No. 3 Planning Tribunal. The tribunal heard appeals last month concerning the proposed treatment of sewage to be discharged in to Lake Ellesmere.

The tribunal’s decision was expected in five to six weeks said the county’s acting chairman (Cr P. X Abbott). Three big works, the watersupply and sewerage schemes and an answer to drainage problems were being considered for Lincoln. “We are looking at about $440,000: we just cannot impose that on Lincoln residents,” said Cr Abbott Priorities had to be set

The proposed sewerage scheme had top priority. If the tribunal insisted on “nutrient stripping” in the sewage-treatment plant that could add about $60,000 to its cost. The council was told by the Southbridge Community Council that the cost of improving sewerage in that township was Jtoo much. A scheme there would cost Southbridge ratepayers $6 a week each for a total cost of $650,000.
