Chinese scientist honoured
A Chinese scientist, Dr Li Lairong, has been elected an honorary member of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Dr Li has contributed greatly to botanical science in New Zealand, particularly by introducing plant seeds from China. He worked for two years in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research after his ship was diverted from Pearl Harbour to New Zealand in 1942. In 1944 his ship was sunk when trying to return to China, and he spent the rest of the war in a Japanese prison camp in Java. Dr Li eventually became president of the Fukien Agricultural University in China, and in February this year led a delegation of Chinese botanical scientists to New Zealand.
