Cup hopefuls leave for Australia today
PA Auckland The Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup entries, Arbre Chene, Karu, Kankama and Evander, are booked to be flown to Australia from Auckland today as part of a consignment of 46 horses. Provided he has travelled well, Kankama could return to racing in Australia with the Liston Stakes, a weight-for-age 1600 m at Sandown this Saturday. Last spring and summer he became one of the best three-year-olds in Australia with a record-breaking win in the Geelong Derby Trial and success in the Australian Derby as his big achievements. Kankama’s trainer, M. T. Sullivan, who is also a partowner of the horse, will again be making his headquarters at Mornington. Besides Kankama he is taking Evander to Melbourne and three other, younger improvers. Arbre Chene, in the care of his trainer, P. K. Cathro,
