Sweet Candy broodmare of the year

PA Wellington Sweet Candy, dam of Dulcify and Cotton Candy, has Won the 'broodmare of the year award for 1'978-79, announced by the council of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association in Wellington yesterday. Sweet Candy, by Todman from the Wilkes mare, Risque, was bred in Australia in 1969, but raced in New Zealand, reaching a place on seven occasions. She has produced two foals of racing age, Dulcify and Cotton Candy, both by Decies. Dulcify, bought at the National Yearling Sale at Trentham by the trainer, Colin Hayes, for $3250. won six races in Australia during last season, including the Victorian Derby, A. J. C. Derby, Australian Cup and Rosehill Guineas, The colt’s stakes winnings amounted to $402,400.

Cotton Candy has won five races,' four at two, and has been placed in stakes races. Sweet Candy’s dam, Risque, won four races in Sydney, but was not a top-flight producer. She had three named foals, but they raced with little success. The next dam is Pique, by Summertime, which was a top-class racemare herself, being rated the leading filly on the New Zealand three-year-old Free • Handicap of the year. She won five races, including the Adrian Knox Oaks Stakes (now the A.J.C. Oaks) at Randwick and the Chelmsford Stakes at Sydney.

In New Zealand, Pique was runner-up in both the Gloaming Stakes and the Trentham Stakes and finished third in a Great Northern Oaks. Pique was a half-sister to Sweet Mist, the dam of the top stayer Gold and Black. Pique produced three winners at stud. Pique was out of Sweet Nymph, a Neptune mare which was a sister to Sweet Spring, the line tracing directly to Cinna.

Sweet Candy’s colt by Decies was sold at this Year’s National Yearling Sale for $20,000 to Cole Brothers, of Australia, and she has a chestnut colt by Zamazaan accepted as an entry for this year’s sale at Trentham in January. Mr Don Dick, of Manurewa, Auckland, acquired Sweet Candy late in 1978. Sweet Candy is only the second non-New Zealandbred mare to be chosen as broodmare of the year, the

other being Sunbride, whicJ was successful in 1961 an< 1968.
