Soviet shipping
Sir, — M. Creel (August 17) has. disputed my remarks in an article about Soviet merchant shipping. He says that Soviet merchant ships concede nothing to seamen’s conditions anywhere in the world. He is entitled to his viewpoint but anyone who has had anything to do with Russian merchant vessels knows that their pay, conditions, and food are nowhere near the luxurious conditions of New Zealand, Scandinavian and other merchant fleets. Compared with Tsarist times they may live like millionaires, but compared with New Zealand conditions today at sea alone, they are miles behind. New Zealand seafarers would not look at their conditions. I have no axe to grind but seeing is believing. They have scant spending money ashore either. Their ships are efficient and modern, I concede. — Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. August 19, 1979.
