Trade with Chile

Sir, — As Chilean refugees we wish to reply to the letter of I. R. Blenkinsop (August 10) regarding our situation in New Zealand. His facts are inaccurate and opinions insulting to both New Zealanders and Chileans. While in New Zealand we have the same rights to freedom of speech as New Zealanders and will take the opportunity to give our opinions on the situation in Chile. We have the right and the duty to defend our compatriots who, in Chile, cannot express their opinions as they are oppressed by the regime. We appeal for the solidarity of the New Zealand workers with the Chilean people so that the boycott is maintained. The New Zealand Government has expressed its condemnation of the Chilean junta for violation of human rights but stronger actions are necessary to show real support for the Chilean people. — Yours, etc., A. MERCADO, H. MERCADO, R. MERCADO, W. SALAZAR, P. PONCE, M. MORALES, O. GUERRERO. August 16, 1979.
