Amalgamation of counties
Sir. — Your report on the results of the petition taken in the Governor’s Bay area on the Mount Herbert County amalgamation ques-
tion (August 18) unfortunately fails truly to reflect the intensity of feeling among the majority of residents over the Mount Herbert County Council’s refusal to take up the invitation to negotiate the possibility of a harbour basin authority with the Lyttelton borough. Whether a peninsular county is formed at a later date is not the present issue but the logic of the formation of a harbour basin authority as a first step is. The response to the petition illustrates that most residents and ratepayers fail to see any logic whatever in the amalgamation of rural Mount Herbert County with largely urban Heathcote County which, despite the present sharing of chambers, has almost totally differing interests. — Yours, etc., R. REINFELDS. ; August 18, 1979.
