Synod rejects call
The Auckland Anglican Synod has soundly defeated a call for the church to withdraw support from the National Council of Churches. The Rev. W. W. Smith proposed that support to be withdrawn from the council until it withdrew support from the World Council of Churches programme to combat racism. Mr Smith said that funds going into that programme were used to give medical help to terrorist guerrilla groups, mostly in
Africa. The funds were not used dinctly for acts of terrorism but they had the effect rf releasing re-_ sources for such acts. He sail that while Christians cduld sympathise with the guerrillas aims, miny were alarmed by their violence and felt the “erd could not Justify the mans.” The motion was soundly beaten, and several speakers felt that Mr Smith, and several Anglican churchgoers, had been midinformed.
