Counties discuss merger
Amalgamation talks are at present being held between the Lyttelton Borough Council and the Heathcote, Wairewa, and Mount Herbert county councils. Earlier this year Heathcote County decided to work towards immediate amalgamation with Mount Herbert, and to begin talks with local bodies on Banks Peninsula towards a “strong unit of local government.”
Representatives met for the second time last evening for informal talks, and said that any comment at this stage would be premature. Discussions were described as being in the exploratory stage. Heathcote County has prepared a detailed statistical report on the effects of amalgamation between Heathcote and Mount Herbert.
The county says rates will not increase and that Mount Herbert residents will not be levied by ad hoc local bodies. Shared plant and machinery would reduce Mount Herbert hiring costs, said a Heathcote County spokesman. Electricity and water supply would continue as at present, and administration of the Mount Herbert County was already being done by the Heathcote County.
