Two seek by-election nomination

A Christchurch city councillor, Mr D. C. Close, has confirmed that he will seek nomination as the Labour Party’s candidate for the Christchurch Central byelection. Mr Close stood as Labour candidate in the Fendalton electorate in last year’s General Election. He teaches at Christchurch Boys’ High School and has also taught in Tanzania. He was elected to the City Council in 1977 and is deputy chairman of the health and general committee. He serves on the Anglican diocesan committee on world development, and runs an Anglican youth club in Aranui. Another nomination for the candidacy will be that of Mr D. S. McKenzie, an Ashburton borough councillor. Mr McKenzie is a former president of the Canterbury Progress League and is on the regional development committee of the Canterbury Promotion Council. Mr McKenzie contested I the Rangiora seat last year for the Labour Party. He is a plastics manufacturer and post-primary teacher.
