Public value of university

The University of Canterbury is a valuable public asset, providing extensive benefits to the community at modest financial demands, says the Vice-Chancellor (Professor A. D. Brownlie). Speaking yesterday to the Riccarton Rotary Club, Professor Brownlie said that the social and cultural life of Christchurch would be 1 impoverished without the university’s contribution. It provides environmental, social, cultural, and intellectual benefits to the community at a low cost in comparison with universities in Britain and Australia, and other tertiary institutions in New Zealand, he said. The cost of a full-time student in New Zealand universities was less than half that in Britain, and twothirds the cost in Australia. In New Zealand, the estimated annua! cost for a fulltime university student for 1978-79 was ' $3400. This compared with $3300 for technical institute students and $BlOO for teachers’ college students. Teacher-training cost more because a full salary was paid to students during training.
