"Preselection and sex discrimination"

Sir, — Ms Newland, in her article, “preselection and sex discrimination" (“The Press,” July 7) suggests that “ . . . religious figures and other leaders of populat opinion have a responsibility to try to dissuade people from this cruellest form of discrimination.” Earlier she quotes St Paul as saying if was harder for a woman than a man to get to heaven. I do not knots where she got that idea from; he certainly did not write it in any of his letters. In fact, his teaching wad quite the opposite: “There is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Chnsl Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28). I suggest to Ms Newland that just as it is important fod religious leaders to encour* age fair treatment for all, s<i it is the responsibility of journalists to quote thoss leaders accurately. — etc., FIONA CAMPBELL, Hataitai.
