Nuclear weapons

Sir, — It is good to hear that the United States have decided to place the issue of a nuclear-free Pacific before the New Zealand public. Between February and April, 23,000 New Zealanders signed a petition calling for a nuclear-free Pacific. The danger to A.N.Z.U.S. is not the New Zealand Labour Party, but the rapidly-devel-oping American first strike capability; this strategy guarantees the obliteration of the “A.N.Z.” in A.N.Z.U.S., by way of a “pre-emptive” nuclear war fought not in America, but throughout the Pacific. Finally, Mr Muldoon himself has stated, in writing, that New Zealand’s beef sales do not depend on our support for the present American nuclearisation of the Pacific. — Yours, etc., J. V. PETERSEN, i July 11, 1979.
