Technical carrying on excellent record

cxc

Canterbury’s excellent record in the junior national soccer cup has been continued this season by Technical, which will meet Petone in the semi-finals on Sunday. Since the tournament began in 1973, Christchurch has been represented in each final. In the first three years, Christchurch United were victorious, beating Papatoetoe 6-5, Manurewa 2-1, and Manurewa again, 1-0, in successive years. In 1976, Rangers took over from United to take the title and retained it in 1977. United took its fourth title last year but was beaten in the early stages of the competition this season. Technical beat New Brighton in its first round match this season, 4-0, and followed that up with a narrow 3-2 win over Cashmere-Wanderers, its toughest match.

It gained a quarter-final place with a 2-1 win over Rangers and in Dunedin beat North End United, 3-2, in pouring rain to take a semi-final place. Coached by John Maguire, the team has several talented individual players but its team-work is one of its outstanding features. The side was put together a week, before the competition started and had only one training session before playing New Brighton. Bearing this in mind, Technical’s effort in reaching the semi-finals is nothing short of remarkable. Ten of the squad play for school teams and three are members of Canterbury junior representative sides this year. The full squad is:-Goal keeper: Peter Hawker; Defence: Brent Crisp (vice-captain), Brent Wallace, Eddie Venczel, Gareth Partington, Simon Millichip; Midfield: John Maguire (captain), Gavin Boloski, David Pugh; Strikers: Peter Shea, David O’Hanlon, Alan Carville, David Hendry, Simon Myers. The majority of the goals have come from Shea and Hendry with O'Hanlon, Carville, Boloski and Crisp chipping in when needed. Hawker has performed especially well in goal for Technical but its strongest department is probably its midfield, where Maguire has stood out. Technical will have a tough battle to reach the final and if it can win the trophy, it will have done extremely well, and will have added to Canterbury’s illustrious record in the tournament. * # # The previously unbeaten
