World trip to probe crane dispute

Shipping News

Harbour board executive officers and union representatives from Mount Maunganui recently went on a world trip to try and settle a manning dispute on a multi-purpose crane installed at the port. The crane is similar to a type under investigation by the Lyttelton Harbour Board.

The Harbour Board Employees’ Union at Mount Maunganui and the Watersiders’ Federation, both claim the right to drive the crane. The matter will now be heard by the Waterfront Industry Tribunal. The board’s executive officers and union officials went on the world fact-finding tour to see how similar cranes at other ports are manned. Bay of Plenty Harbour Board staff are being taught to drive the crane.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board Is examining a multi-purpose or mobile type of crane, rather than a cellular second crane, for the container terminal.

Tests on the German-manufac-tured crane at Mount .Maunganui revealed lifts more than 75 per cent heavier than the rated safe working load. The tests were carried out by suspending four concrete blocks and a large water ballast tank from the crane, a load of about 40 tonnes.

The load was then run out over the water and suspended above a moored barge. The empty ballast tank was filled with water to make the 70-tonne load. # St Ss

The China Merchants Steam Navigation Company is building 14 new container ships for expanded services, Including New Zealand and Australia. Two general cargo ships will also be added to the new fleet for the service, which will also include North America, Europe, and the Middle East. The cellular vessels will each have a capacity of 1600 containers and are expected to start leaving the yards from March next year at the rate of one every two to three months. Construction has started at the China Shipbuilding Corporation’s Kaohsiung yards. ARRIVALS Kotuku (9.7 a.m.), 16,221, Mars-
