The domino record
?A Auckland Mice, draughts, leaking roofs, and a pneumatic drill al! threatened the making of a world record in Auckland during the last two weeks. But the dangers were overcome and yesterday 229.000 dominoes were sent falling to break the world domino-toppling record of 170,000 dominoes set recently in New York. A group of about 10 enthusiasts worked in the North Shore Teachers’ College hall to prepare for the record attempt, proceeds from which went towards Telethon. One of the enthusiasts, Mr P. R. Snowdon, said that in the early stages, when about 80,000 dominoes had been on the floor, a mouse had crept
into the hall and had toppled a few thousand dominoes. A trap was set and the villain was caught. Mr Snowdon said, draughts had also caused some problems and rolls of tape had been needed I to seal doors, windows, ; and vents in the hall. A Ministry of Works pneumatic drill and a broken window which a I serviceman had come to. repair had also posedl threats but both had been averted. Then cries of horror ! rang through the hall i yesterday when heavy rain | and a leaking roof caused 1 a big puddle to form in the middle of the domino formations. Volunteers gingerly mopped up in time for the | big push in the afternoon.
