Motor-cycles and accidents

Sir, — It appears to be getting common for politicians and senior civil servants to make public pronouncement of results from private or secret surveys. At least, that is what appears to be the case with the latest opinions expressed by the head of the Accident Compensation Commission, Mr Sandford, regarding the accident rate, and cost of accidents to “large” motorcycles. Mr Sandford should supply publicly all the information and statistical evidence he has to support his public opinions, and also give his definition of a large motor-cycle. At present, the rider of a motor-cycle of a capacity of over 126 cc has to pay more to relicense his vehicle than the driver of an unlimited capacity car. The fact that virtually only cars are involved in accidents resulting from alcohol involvement, and that this cost to the commission is astronomical, illustrates the unfairness of this system. — Yours, etc., RUSSELL GARBUTT.
