Railwaymen’s ban

Sir, — With reference to the railway employees’ refusal to handle goods destined for the North Island, in protest against the withdrawal of the Silver Star, f cannot recall any similar support from the North Island railway unions when our Christchurch-Dunedin railcar was stopped. Why do our South Island railway

unions appear to be subservient to Big Brother in the North? If we cannot enlist their support for our problems why should we take part in theirs? Is this a demonstration of “solidarity” or are our blokes merely wanting the same wages for less effort? — Yours, etc., N. ALLEN. June 14, 1979.
