TV2 transcript

Sir, — I find the reported statement by Mr D. R. Lange in Parliament (“The Press,” June 14) that there had been a “deafening silence” from the persons named in the TV2 transcript guite bewildering. I have read several reports in which these persons have denied that they have had anything to do with drug trafficking. What more should they do? Mr Prebble made sure by the device of Parliamentary privilege that they could not sue him. I can find no shred of evidence in the transcript to connect any of the persons or the yacht mentioned with drugs. — Yours, etc., J. MARSHALL.

June 14, 1979. Sir, —- The country is at war — New Zealanders are suffering and dying, the taxpayer pays for the carnage. The enemy, heroin dealers, are winning and laughing all the way to the bank. Mr Prebble deserves commendation for his courage in publicising the TV2 transcript and proposing a select committee of Parliamentarians to probe drug trafficking and assist the police. It is indeed unfortunate that innocent people may be named, but Draconian measures are sometimes needed during a war to combat much larger evils. The innocent can be given every opportunity to clear themselves and enlist with other New Zealanders in the mission to find and punish heroin dealers. — Yours, etc., L. F. J. ROSS, June 13, 1979.
