W Prebble, >n Wednesday evening tailed lor the second time to have i private member’s bill on freedom of information tccepted by Parliament But he believes he has nade some progress since his irst bill was turned down h 1977. "I believe I have taken the government to the point that then the Danks Committee 'eports, it is going to have to take some action,” he said lutside the House, after the Jpeaker (Mr J. R. Harrison) tad ruled out his second bill
because it involved an appropriation of public money.
The Danks Committee was set up by the Government to look into official secrecy. It is expected to report later in the year.
Mr Prebble said he felt that his bill, which was given the formality of a second reading in Parliament, had also helped to mobilise public opinion on the issue of freedom of information.
The bill proposed giving the public the right to apply for official information and putting a duty on public authorities to supply information subject to certain exclusions.
