Breakdown trucks at accidents

Sir, —On Sunday five breakdown trucks raced from the city to an accident involving one small car at the top end of Heathcote Valley, a distance of about 11 kilometres. As three of them arrived about the same time as the ambulance, their speed from the city must have been considerable. Two were even from the same firm. In view of the critical fuel situation, I wonder if the Ministry of Transport and the firms would care to comment on this unnecessary wastage. — Yours, etc.. L. R. BLOXHAM. May 21, 1979. [The senior Chief Traffic. Officer of the Ministry of Transport, Mr E. E. Dunlop, replies: “If the drivers of breakdown vehicles are found to be breaking the

laws as to speed, appropriate action is always taken. In the matter of fuel usage, the Ministry has no authority.” Mr M. J. Stevens, manager of S.O.S. Breakdown Services, comments; “The breakdown business provides a necessary service. It is a complicated operation and difficult to explain in a few words. However, I assure your correspondent that it is not as wasteful as he- suggests., If he would like to contact me I would be happy to explain to him how it works.”]
