Hospital parking
Sir. — The news that the local authority will spend another $60,000 on the construction of a further car park for visitors to ’he Christchurch Hospital is typical of our administrators’ thinking. With the vast open spaces of North Hagley Park available in close proximity to the hospital, this parking problem could have been resolved years ago for a fraction of this sum. This neglected area of North Hagley Park has been an eyesore to the environment over the years, but because the city fathers of 100 or so years ago stipulated that the park should remain intact for all time, thousands of people have been put to great inconvenience as a result. Those dedicated men of the last century could not have foreseen the coming of the motor-car and the ensuing parking problem; otherwise they would have acted accordingly. — Yours, etc.,
L. WESTNEY. June 13, 1979.
