Electoral system

Sir, — The British Liberals who polled 13.1 per cent of the votes without, winning a single seat would have won 10 seats under a system of proportional representation in the recent E.E.C. elections (“The Press,” June 13). Once again our unfair “bloodyminded” British method of voting (simple majority) has made a mockery of democracy as it does in our elections, where, for example; Social Credit in the last election, winning 15 per cent of the vote, received only one seat instead of the democratic 15 the party was entitled to. In reference to ticks and crosses, may I say that voters . using proportional representation methods find little difficulty in marking their ballot papers in order of sequential preference. — Yours, etc.,

L. J. ROBINSON, June 13, 1979.
