Heathcote County library

Sir, —What happened to the petition by 224 Heathcote residents asking that the Heathcote Council reopen discussions or negotiations with a view to paying a library rate for the city library services? Is it to be swept under the carpet with a quaint turn of phrase from Mr McKenzie? Cr Thompson does not need to fear amalgamation with the city because of it, as we already pay a Town Hall rate, Transport Board rate, and museum rate, etc. The petition signatures were collected in just four days and each one of the collectors could spend little time. If another petition is necessary to show what residents feel, it will have thousands of signatures on it. Could we have some information please?—Yours, D. McDOWELL.

June 10, 1979. [The Heathcote County Clerk, Mr K. D. Stills, replies in the abence of the County Chairman: “The petition referred to by your correspondent was received by the council at its meeting on May 24, 1979, when the council resolved to refer it to the finance and administration committee for consideration when that committee is discussing the matter of library services for the county. The subject has been placed on the agenda for the committee meeting to be held on June 19.”]
