Apprentice injured

A Greymouth apprentice, Carl Ritchie, aged 15, suffered a broken collarbone in a three-horse fall at the Riccarton Turf Club’s trials at Motukarara on Tuesday. Ritchie, apprenticed to the Omoto trainer, Ray Shields, was brought down when Twilight Guy slipped and fell on the turn into the straight in a 1000 m event. Les Collins, the rider of Twilight Guy. was not hurt and Maurice Thornley walked away after landing awkwardly. Thornley was shot into the air when his mount stumbled into the other two fallen runners.
