Westville works impressively

Special Correspondent. Palmerston North Westville was the most impressive worker at Awapuni yesterday when final trials were held wide out on the course proper. There was a lot of rain on Wednesday and ths; track for tomorrow will be much softer than for the first day. Westville worked late when the ground was well cut up. He ran l-100m, the last 1200 in Imin 22.65, and the 600 in 41s. This was good time in the ground. Eric Temperton has a big and powerful team engaged tomorrow and looks set to go close in the Awapuni Hurdles, in which he has Koiro Kurt and Witchety engaged. They worked together

over 1600 m in Imin 53.55, the last 600 in 43.45. Witchety looks the better prospect after his fine run on the flat last week. He has trained on the right way since. So has Chandos, his main rival. Yesterday he raced ■ right away from Manawatu Steeples Contender, Far Heights, over 1600 in 1.585, the last 600 in 41s. London Trader could hardly have been more impressive in running 1000 m in Imin 8.65, the last 600 m in 395. What beats him should win the Doncaster. His race-rival, Taiphilae, sped over 1200 m in Imin 235, the last 600 m in 41s while Gavade ran 1000 m in Imin 10s, the last 600 m in 40s, working freely all the v/ay.
