Bowls problem resolved
The Christchurch Bowling Centre has clarified the position in regard to substitutes and replacements in its champion-of-champions tournaments. Last summer a complicated situation arose when Sonny Calder (Linwood), acting as a substitute for Kevin Darling, who was in Napier representing the South Island, reached the final of the champion-of-Champions pairs.
Calder was beaten in the final, but if he had won there were mixed views whether he would be credited with the title, or whether it would go to Darling, who remained the official member of the team.
The chairman of the centre’s match committee, Mr D. Martin, said yesterday that a ruling had been obtained from the chairman of the national judicial committee, Mr M. R. Buchan. This was to the effect that the Canterbury fixture book, which indicated that Darling was still a part of the team,
was out of date with tha new laws introduced two years ago. “Our interpretation was that the club championship was a preliminary for the champion-of-champions and therefore only substitutes, not replacements, could ba made.
“However, under the laws the two events are sep« " arate competitions and reoi placements are permissible, said Mr Martin.
He said that in the replacements would be» allowed and the replace* ments would be officiaw members of the team, abl# 1 to skip if desired. Substitutes, for one or two games, would also be f accepted, but substitutes t
would not be allowed to skip.
“It will be up to the clubs to determine which they want, a replacement or a substitute, with the match committee taking into account tha circumstances of each particular case,” said Mr Martin.
