Maori captain optimistic

PA Auckland The New Zealand Maoris rugby captain, Mac McCalllcn, said that Maori rugby should boom, after the team arrived home unbeaten from a tour of Australia and the Pacific Islands. Before the team left New Zealand McCallion emphasised to the players that their efforts would be the making or breaking of New Zealand Maori rugby. “There can be no doubt the tour was a success,” he said. “Everyone in the side realised this was the big test of Maori rugby. “It was simply great the way the guys stuck together, a full team effort, and Maori rugby should boom.”

The pleasing aspect of the team s success was the power shown in the forwards, McCab* lion said. “We put a lot of time in<a practising rucking, mauling, and rolling. The forward power that emerged was quite unreal,” ha said. “The five tight guys were tremendous throughout the tour.’* McCallion’s only regrets were that the backs were not brought into the game often enough, and the brief nature of the tour. “We played three tests in six. days, and on top of this cr had a lot of formal functions.' The boys did not have enough 'time for relaxation,” he said.
