Wanganui goes down
PA Palmerston North Wanganui faces a bleak season in the second division of the national rugby championship, if yesterday’s 20-7 defeat by Manawatu at Palmerston North is any indication. Manawatu, with six All Black trials players out and others missing because of injury, looked anything but the side that will line up in later first division championship matches this season.
Wanganui took an early 7-0 lead, and were pushing Manawatu in the scrums and winning the line-outs
However the Manawatu side steadied, although outweighed a stone a man by Wanganui, and came back strongly. For Manawatu, Ken Granger, Rangi Attenborough, and Geoff Grant scored tries. Granger kicked two penalties and a conversion.
Richard Murray scored Wanganui’s try, and Ray Gordon kicked a penalty.
