Govt ‘paying price’
PA Wellington The Labour Party has 1 blamed the S3M cut in the universities budget on the 1 Government’s need to fin- i ance. .the superannuation 1 scheme. 1 "The Government is now paying the price of ; its foolhardy election bribes —■ at the expense i of New Zealand’s educa- ; tion system,” said the i party’s spokesman on edu- 1 cation (Mr C. R. Marshall) and the convener of the Labour caucus committee i on education (Mr T. K. <
Burke) in a joint statement. “The recent announcement that S3M must be cut from the universitits’ budget for 1979 is the predictable 'result of paying pensions to those who are alreadv wealthy. “Where else can the Government get the finance for its insatiable superannuation scheme they said. Mr Marshall also attacked the Government’s decision to’ charge private overseas students $l5OO in
addition to the fees they already pay. “The Government is making is usual foul-up of foreign relations,” he said. "Flow can it justify this imposition? The Prime Minister said that the students. came from wealthy backgrounds, but can offer merely hearsay to back up this assertion. “Many of the students have come because of the financial sacrifices of their family, while others have whole villages working to support them,” he said.
