Airport crash alert
A crash alert was called at Christchurch Airport yesterday for the landing of a United States Air Force Cl4l Starlifter. The crew of the aircraft had declared an emergency after part of a checking system to ensure that the landing gear was down had failed to work, according to an airport spokesman. Seven Fire Service appliances were sent to the airport at 1.30 p.m. to support airport crash-fire
services but the Starlifter landed safely at 1.50 p.m. The malfunction had not been serious but the crew had been required by regulations to adopt emergency procedures, said a United States Air Force spokesman. The Starlifter was en route from Melbourne on a special mission to support a, global weatherstudy. The fault was repaired yesterday and the aircraft will leave for Tahiti today.
