Peking meeting

New Zealand and China differ in their assessments of the global political situation but the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Over-, seas Trade (Mr Taiboys) will not say what the differences are, reports NZPA from Peking. After an extended fourhour meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister (Mr Huang Hua), Mr Talboys said that the meeting had provided “confirmation of the fact there are areas of agreement and different assessments.” He declined to detail areas of agreement and the points on which the assess-

ments differed but said that they were in agreement that the territorial integrity of independent states of Indo-China should be respected. This means that New Zealand shares China’s view that Vietnam should withdraw the 90,000 or so troops it has stationed in Kampuchea. Mr Taiboys said Mr Huang had made it clear that China still held strong views about the objectives of the Soviet Union, views which were as intense as those presented to him when he last visited Peking in late 1977.
