Old hall to go
Foresters Hall, in Oxford Terrace, near the Centennial Pool, one of Christchurch's oldest buildings, will be demolished soon to make room for a three-storey Rank Xerox Corporation office building.
Moorcom Construction, Ltd, hopes to start on the project in June. The work will also involve the demolition of the building next to the hall.
Early Canterbury settlers formed a local lodge of the Ancient Order of Foresters in 1852, and the original building, since extended, was opened in 1860.
The timber building has been let to many groups over the years, and has weathered many trends. It has recently been used for disco dances.
